“A resuscitator of football Programs”

Just in the way of understanding what Bob did during his time at Fitch, it should be noted that in his first experience as a football head coach he took Tantasqua Regional High School in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, a team that had not won a game in 33 previous contests, to a 3-5 record for his first season.  After 5 seasons at Tantasqua, Bob finished with a record of 23 wins and 9 losses.  Moving to New London High School in 1966, he resurrected a struggling program culminating with 9 wins and no losses in 1968 and New London being named the number 1 team in the state by the New Haven Register.

Coming to Fitch in 1973, after serving 4 years as an assistant coach for the UCONN Football Program, Bob organized a young coaching staff by giving them offensive and defensive responsibilities.  He made them learn how to teach the skills and drills that would allow individual players to become proficient in his program.  He recruited in the school for players.  The record his first year was the same as Fitch’s previous year: 1-7-1.  But that season was much different, the team was competitive and the coaching staff felt they could have won 3 games that season.  The next year the team did win 3 games to 6 losses, and the coaching staff felt they could have won 6 games. The next year the team went 7 and 2, and the staff felt that team could have been undefeated.  Then in 1976 the team not only went undefeated but also played in the first ever CIAC State Football Playoffs  Game, beating Trumbull High School 29 to 7.  The team was the SAC Champions, the State “LL” Champions, ranked number 1 in the State by the New Haven Register, and ranked number 1 in New England and number 10 in the country by the National Sports News Service.  They were honored by The Walter Camp Foundation as the “Best Team in Connecticut”, and received Commendations from the State Senate, the State House of Representatives, and the local city council.
